This home at one time belonged to Ada Marquis. Her family lived near Leaskdale and she was a very close friend to Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of green Gables. In 1920 she was married to Robert Dusto by Reverend Ewan McDonald, Lucy’s husband, Bob Dusto, was a butcher in the Beale block. They farmed just west of Sunderland and after Bob died in 1950, his wife Ada moved into this house with her sister Mabel Prentiss and her husband Russell and their young son Ralph Prentice. After Ada Marquis left, the home was bought by R. W. Groves, who was a veterinary surgeon.
When Dr. Groves came to Sunderland in 1944, he first stayed with his cousin William Sugget and then moved into town. Dr. Groves also bought the store next door from William Haney for a dispensary office. When Dr. Groves moved to Cannington, the next owners in 1956 were Carl and Ava Umphrey. Carl ran a barber shop here and it was a social center for all the local Euchre players. Carl was also the chief of the Volunteer Fire Department.
