The Harness Shop – 89 River St
Charter purchased the property from Mrs. William Doble and operated his harness-making business from a shop at the front of the building. While Samuel worked at his trade during the day, his father-in-law, James Britton, helped look after the shop. Britton had been a widower since 1919.
Samuel Charter continued operating the harness shop here until at least around 1940. Harness makers were once an important part of a rural community such as Sunderland, making and repairing the leather harnesses and other equipment needed for horses used on farms, for transportation and by local businesses.
The Charter family had extensive business interests in Sunderland. Their properties included a butcher shop to the west as well as a furniture store and funeral home across River Street.
The former harness shop later became a private residence and has remained part of the historic streetscape along River Street.
Now it is Black Chandelier Tattoo.
