The Harness Shop – 89 River St
To the east of the Beale block is a private residence owned by the Miller family and at one time one of their ancestors, Samuel Charter, had a harness shop at the front of the store. While Sam worked through the day, his father-in-law, James Britton, who was a widower after 1919, looked after the shop. Sam still had that shop around 1940. Sam had purchased the house from Mrs. William Doble, who had moved out of the doble house at 32 Albert St. After her husband died in 1910.
Her son Claire Doble moved into that home in 1919 with his new bride, May Toker. Unfortunately, Claire, the newly elected reeve of Bride, died from the Spanish flu epidemic before he could take office in 1919. Many local families lost loved ones during this contagious illness. The Charters owned many buildings in town, and these included the butcher shop to the west and the funeral home and furniture store across the road.
