William Nassau Doble Home – 12 River St
William Nassau Doble was a very smart businessman and retired from farming at the age of 42. He owned several farming properties and later donated some of them to his nephews. At one time he had interest in the Sunderland Telephone Company and bought up many of the shares when their value was low. Later, in 1957, his brother Milton James Doble was the president of the telephone company. Since there are so many William Dobles. His nickname was Gypsy Bill because of the colorful scarfs he wore on his neck. William Doble is one of the nine people from Sunderland that went to France for the unveiling of the Vimy monument in 1936.
A relative of his Lieutenant John James Doble, had been killed at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. William and his wife Mary Alice McFadden were strong supporters of the Scotch Cemetery near Manila and the St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
His parents were the William Doble and Margaret Ruddy who lived at 32 Albert St. His brother Clare had died of the flu before taking office as Reeve of Brock in 1919.
