The Sunderland Legion – 104 River St

For its first decades, the branch operated without the present Legion hall. In 1958, the Legion purchased the former home of Dr. Robert Grierson and converted it for meetings and other branch activities. The neighbouring property was later acquired to provide room for expansion.
In 1973, a new Legion hall was constructed on the site, creating the building that became the permanent home of Brock Branch 141.
The Legion’s central purpose has always been service to veterans and their families. In Sunderland, that role is closely connected with the community’s remembrance of those who served in Canada’s wars. The cenotaph in front of the Sunderland Town Hall records the names of 23 local servicemen lost during the First World War and 16 lost during the Second World War.
Over the years, the Sunderland Legion has also become an important community gathering place. Its hall has hosted meals, dances, card games, social events and countless other activities, while providing an affordable meeting and event space for local residents and organizations.
The history of Brock Branch 141 reflects the broader role of the Royal Canadian Legion in small communities across Canada: preserving the memory of those who served while continuing to serve the community they called home.
