Robert Doble Home – 48 River St
Robert Doble was a nephew of the banker James Doble. After Robert died in 1949, his son Floyd Doble left the farm on the 4th of Brock and lived in this house.
Floyd kept a shotgun near the heating vent in his bedroom above the front door. Rumor has it that Floyd still sits in that rocking chair guarding the entrance to his home. It’s said that one time when the house was being sold, a potential buyer examined the house and found an elderly gentleman rocking in a chair in the upper bedroom. He spoke to the buyer saying that this would be a good home. Needless to say, the sale did not go through, and the real estate agent told the potential buyer that the house was completely empty.
When E. G Sutherland managed the Western bank in Sunderland about 1902, guarding the bank at night from the upstairs apartment was considered part of his duties.
Later, the Robert Doble house was the site of an antique shop called the Glass Garage.
Many of those antiques came from the sale of the estate of West Doble.
