Robert Doble Home – 48 River St

Floyd apparently took the security of his home seriously. He kept a shotgun near the heating vent in his upstairs bedroom, directly above the front entrance.
That detail eventually became part of one of Sunderland’s local ghost stories.
According to the story, when the house was later offered for sale, a prospective buyer went through the supposedly empty building and encountered an elderly gentleman sitting in a rocking chair in an upstairs bedroom. The old man spoke to the visitor and assured him that this would be a good home.
The prospective buyer subsequently mentioned the encounter to the real estate agent—only to be told that nobody was living in the house.
The sale, perhaps understandably, did not go through.
Local legend maintains that Floyd Doble still sits in his rocking chair, keeping watch over the entrance to his old River Street home.
In later years, the Robert Doble house became home to an antique shop called the Glass Garage. Many of the antiques sold there came from the estate of West Doble, continuing another connection between this property and Sunderland’s extensive Doble family history.
