The Hardware Store – 92 River St
Early maps and photos show the home bank in 1904 to the west of Taylor’s store on the south side of River Street. At some point before 1920, the Home Bank had moved across the street to where Elgin Bagshaw ran his hardware store from 1920 to after 1970. While the Vault was still there, the Bagshaws would let customers use the safety deposit boxes for their valuables. Above the store was a sign promoting Murphy’s paints and Narvo products in the early 40s.
Elgin Bagshaw was a member of the Sunderland business association. In 1926, after the Bagshaw family left, Hugh MacDonald and the Pilgrim family opened a Home Hardware store here. In 1982, they purchased the east side of the Thumb Thorne Funeral Home and started the Sunderland Homeland Furniture Store.
