Dr. James McDermott Home – 160 River St
Dr. McDermott began serving the Sunderland community about 1870 and continued practising here for the next 50 years, until his death in 1920.
Medicine was only one part of his business life. An advertisement in the 1872 Directory for the County of Ontario promoted his Sunderland drugstore:
J. M. McDermott, M.D.
Dealer in drugs and medicines, paints, oils and dyestuffs, perfumery, fancy and toilet articles, and pure wines and liquors for medicinal purposes.
Dr. McDermott also became involved in some of Sunderland’s prominent commercial properties. By 1910, the large building at River and Albert streets was known as the McDermott Block. That same year, he supervised and financed the construction of the Brock House Hotel.
The McDermott Block remained a Sunderland landmark until it was destroyed in the devastating fire of 1949.
