Fresh Mart – 97 River St
In 1929, Wilford Haney purchased the property immediately west of the Beale Block and established a business selling farm implements and Moffitt appliances. Haney had a wide range of skills and also worked as an electrician, mechanic and repairman.
His business expanded over the years as technology changed life in Sunderland and on the surrounding farms. By 1955, Haney advertised Ford cars, trucks and tractors alongside household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.
In 1960, Haney sold the store to Bob and Gene Young. The Youngs had operated a grocery business in the neighbouring Beale Block since 1951 and moved here to obtain the additional space they needed to expand. Their self-serve grocery store remained at this location until 1975.
In 1975, the business was sold to the Flindell family, beginning another long chapter in the building’s history as a Sunderland grocery store. The business later became Fresh Mart, continuing a tradition of retail activity at this River Street location that stretches back more than a century.
