13. Flindell’s Fresh Mart

Flindell’s Fresh Mart – 97 River St

This building is shown on the fire insurance maps of Sunderland in 1904 as a hardware store. In 1929, Wilford Haney bought the building just to the west of the Beale block. Here he sold farm implements and also Moffitt appliances. He had a variety of talents and worked as an electrician, mechanic and repairman.

In 1955, his ad said that he sold Ford cars, trucks and tractors as well as fridges and washing machines. Eventually he sold the store to Bob and Gene Young in 1960. They had been in the Beale block to the east since 1951 and then moved to Mr. Hanley’s store so they could expand their business.

They stayed here until 1975 and at that time the self-serve store was sold to the Flindell family, and they’ve been running it for almost 40 years. The store now sells groceries and also operates as an LCBO and beer store.
