William (Bill) McDougall

Bill McDougall ran a very successful excavating company located just east of the village of Sunderland. However, he may be best remembered for his contributions to community service and environmental protection organizations.

The Lions Club recognized McDougall’s leadership capacity, appointing him a District Governor of the organization. Two particular Lions projects reflect Bill’s generous nature. As an annual fundraiser the Sunderland Lions ran a Turkey Shoot and Bill McDougall always offered his property as a site for the event. Lions International, operate Camp Kirk, a summer camp for special needs children near Kirkfield, Ontario. When this camp was being built, McDougall’s company excavated the site without charge.

In contrast to the physical nature of his job, McDougall distinguished himself with his work in the Masonic Lodge. His memory was keen and he was a skilled orator, so much so that he was honoured with an appointment to the position of District Deputy Grand Master.

McDougall recognized the importance of conserving the natural environment and became a strong supporter of Ducks Unlimited. In one of its projects, several wildlife habitats were created in the wetlands along the Beaver River south of the 3rd concession of Brock. McDougall’s firm donated time and equipment to the completion of this project.
