A local entrepreneur and businessman, William (Bill) Doyle left the farm to establish and operate two businesses in the village of Sunderland. Before, during and after World War II, Doyle operated an egg grading station at the top of the hill on River Street. This operation provided an important service to local mixed farms having surplus egg production. During the war, Doyle supplied eggs to several of Toronto’s major downtown hospitals. Additionally, he operated Doyle’s Lucky Dollar, a grocery market at the corner of River and Albert Street. Doyle’s businesses provided jobs for locals and with several of his staff remaining in his employ for many years.
In 1949, William Doyle donated a parcel of land at the corner of Highway 12 and Brock’s 7th concession for a new St. Malachy’s Catholic Church.
In 1955, the Sunderland Lions Club was formed and Bill Doyle was its charter president.
