Enid Martin was born near Greenbank, Ontario in 1914 and graduated from the University of Toronto with a teaching diploma from the Toronto Conservatory of Music.
Enid began teaching music in Sunderland in 1934 and trained many students to be excellent musicians. Through her tutelage, many of the community’s young people acquired Grade VIII piano and Grade Il theory certification which then could be used as a credit for secondary school graduation. She is remembered to have urged and assisted many of her more gifted students to extend their musical study to more advanced accreditation.
For a time, Enid was the organist and choir director at the St. Andrews United Church.
In 1957, she organized a piano competition that is believed to have formed the groundwork for the Sunderland Lions Music Festival, an event that has continued for over 60 years.
A special recital in 1994, performed by Enid’s past students held at the Sunderland Town Hall paid tribute to her sixty years of teaching in Brock Township.
