Stan Miller was born in Brock Township in 1895. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the 116th Battalion and went overseas where he was wounded at Vimy Ridge. Upon his recovery, he returned to Brock and resumed farming on the north side of Concession 6 just west of the village of Sunderland. He named his farm ‘Ormadale’ as a tribute to a British property he had admired while on active duty in England.
Stan also became engaged in local municipal affairs and served as a Councillor, Deputy-Reeve and Reeve. It is noted too that he was appointed and served as an Ontario County Justice of the Peace.
Stan was an advocate for the formation of the Brock Branch, No. 141 of the Royal Canadian Legion in 1929, serving as its first President. In 1965, he was presented the Royal Canadian Legion’s meritorious service medal.
Following the second world war, Stan promoted and led a project that saw the construction of the Sunderland Memorial Arena. Further he was a founding member of the Sunderland Co-Operative. In 1950, he was appointed Clerk of Brock Township, a position that he held until his death in 1967.
